Koi Pond 2
40" x 30" I wanted to get this big guy done before heading out on Europe tour. Started w blues and then added green and pink with gold pen highlights for the background. Then using a palette knife and various colors, made the koi "pads," then used pens for the fish. I like how it turned out. I guess I'm in my "koi" phase...
"I've been doing a lot of this lately... solid background, then loading up the palette knife with various colors and seeing what shapes arrive on the canvas. I've been messing around with this approach and doing various things with it. I felt like this one should just be like it is. I like the movement, composition and color."
This place doesnt exist. These are some of my favorite places on the planet. Make one of your own. Include all the places that have affected you. There is no template for this... Use your imagination, tell me the places that are important to you, and I will do the rest.
"This started as a solid orange background, then streaks of blue, then loaded up the palette knife. I thught the shapes looked like Koi fish, so I ran with it. I like this one as the third of the Koi series."
"I really dig this one. It was the first time I thought 'this looks like an ACTUAL koi fish' so I googled koi fish image and found a line drawing that inspired me. I really dig how the background came to life."
"This is an extension of what my buddy Chad asked me to paint. Its a riff on the first attempt at the Pink Floyd album 'Wish you were here.' I let the juices flow and ended up somewhere between there and dark side."
"My buddy Chad asked if I could do a section of the Pink Floyd album 'Wish you Were Here." I liked this part of the cover the best. Every time I look at it, I see something else. Not only a great album, but great imagery."
Experimenting with palette knife, colors, and gold outlining. I also recently discovered an artist called Spark on IG and I took a page out of his play book to make these creatures. I thought the main character looked like a Newt."
"Arguably one of *the most* influential albums of my youth: Smashing Pumpkins/Siamese Dream. This is a zoom in on the album cover. Go listen to that album right now and tell me it isnt a masterpiece."
"Another incredibly influential album from the 90s. Mad Season/Above. This album is dark, raw, and exploratory. Mastery. Lane Staley was a phenom." 6"x6"
"Super happy accident.. I was attempting to do something else, and this happened. I didnt have the heart to mess with it. This is the closest I can get to watercolor" 6"x6"
"This one is a bridge between my cityscape phase and my abstract phase. I started to let go of realism while still embracing some grid structure. I love the mountains and color choices. He's a big Johnny. Lives in my bedroom currently." 4'x2'
"My first big attempt at a background that wasnt dark. At this point, still using tape for hard edges, palette knife, and color matches. Gold outlines." 3'x3'
"Maybe the final evolution of my horizon/cloud phase. This is the beginning of the end of my cityscape phase. I was also a little intimidated by the sheer size of the canvas. At this point, still using tape for hard lines, but starting to loosen my grip on reality." 4'x2'
"Oh yeah, just full on releasing all preconceived notions. Starting to explore abstract, but also not ready to let go of clouds or mountains just yet. Those things seemed to bring me some center. Buckle up. Also the first time I used a center of perspective with a sun." 3'x3'
"One of my first 'abstract' paintings in large format. Flat back background with some color highlights and then I went wild with tape and palette knife colors. This reminded me of a Koi pond... Not sure why." 4'x2'
"Into my abstract phase with tape and palette knife. In search of an idea for a merch item for my Live from Laurel Canyon show, I thought an original piece of art would sell better than trucker hats and t-shirts. Not sure I nailed it, but this is the start of an idea. I also started experimenting with writing actual lyrics from the show. Would anyone buy this print at the merch table?" 3'x2'
"Maybe the first time I used a sun as a center point. I noticed a darkness and a lightness to this painting. I was considering ideas on how to use song themes from Live from Laurel Canyon as jumping off points for paintings. I knew this one was related to 'Fire and Rain' by James Taylor. Ms. Holly Pyle did the rest by adding lyrics and her own style. I thought it was a cool collaboration. Also the first time I incorporated actual fire and rain into the piece." 3'x2': Collaboration with Holly Pyle
"'Is everything okay' was what my nephew Charlie said when he saw this painting for the first time. He was maybe 10 at the time. Not sure what I said in response, but I thought it was a good title for this piece. This one started and stopped several times." 3'x2'
"One of my last bigger scale cityscape paintings. I finally started to understand how perspective worked and what actual cities looked like and how they moved. I love the simplicity of this one, the boldness, the hard edges."
"I decided to release my strangle hold on what a horizon looks like. I couldnt quite release my stranglehold on having something 'real' to anchor the idea (hence the cityscape with the mountains). At the end, it reminds me of 'Hail to the Thief'." 24" x 18"
"I was told by a fine art gallery (that I was trying to show in) that I should move away from the cityscape and get bolder and bigger. This was first attempt at understanding what they meant."
"Similar to the first approach.. this one more textured and weird. This was also the last remnants of using organics items in the foreground, Here we have cactus and such."
"In an effort to create a piece of merch for my Live from Laurel Canyon patrons, I started dabbling with making 'canyon' paintings. This was a proof of concept painting. Also, started to play with what skyscrapers would look like in my world." 8"x8"
"This is one of the last paintings with this sky approach.... no clouds, bold colors, mountains in the distance, city upfront. A riff on Manhatten, maybe from a different angle." 8"x8"
"Experimenting with clouds formations and color palettes. Starting to mess with using other colors for the cityscape. This is an evolving trend." 8"x8"
